Check ups turned into more

We started today bright and early, with the plan to go to some follow up appointments at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s and then have a relaxing fun evening in the cities. Well, Easton foiled that plan!

Things started off normal. We made it to the cities no problem. Even made it early enough to take some pictures and take a walk outside!

Appointment #1

Our first stop was imaging to do an ultrasound in Easton’s right arm and his neck. You may recall his PICC line used to be in his right arm, but after a clot was discovered. We had to take that line out. This clot, called a thrombus, has gotten smaller since Easton has been on twice daily blood thinner injections. However, it has not gone away as they expected it to.

Appointment #2

Then we headed up up to the 9th floor to meet with Hepatology. They manage Easton’s PICC line and blood thinner. His PICC line is now in his right arm after it had to be replaced due to the first clot. I had mentioned some problems we had been having with his line recently. They were not happy with how tough Easton’s line has been to flush. It has become very “sticky” and tough to use. So, they scheduled us to come in for another ultrasound of his left arm/neck.

Appointment #3+

We came back back a few hours later and returned to imaging. We did the second ultrasound and the tech asked us to wait around for a minute. A minute turned to 30. Then the radiologist asked to speak with us. She said that Easton had formed another clot on his new line.

Becuase of this, it isn’t safe for us to continue using that PICC line outside of the hospital. Easton has to be hooked up to his TPN infusion 22 hours a day or his glucose drops, so we had to be admitted until we have more answers. So, we have a nice room at the U of M Masonic again! Easton also has cold/flu symptom. So we will be keeping a super close eye on that!

We aren’t sure why he is still clotting as he is on blood thinners. Labs have been drawn and are being run tonight. We will consult with hematology in the morning to take a closer look at his genetics and blood as well as determining if he will need a new PICC line or port access to be safe at home.
